Cable Bahamas christens new cable service

Erik J. Russell, General Manager - Grand Bahama & Abaco
Cable Bahamas Ltd.

Tel: (242) 350-8850, Fax: (242) 350-8880

NASSAU, BAHAMAS-Friday, August 19, 2005: In a media event held at their corporate headquarters on Friday Cable Bahamas revealed the new brand name of the upcoming digital television service, Oceans Digital TV. Cable Bahamas is set to launch the new digital TV service on a limited basis in Eleuthera on Monday, August 22, and it will officially launch in Grand Bahama and Abaco on October 3 and in New Providence on October 11.

Director of Marketing and Pay-Per-View for Cable Bahamas David Burrows said in a prepared statement that "Oceans Digital TV will revolutionise cable television and entertainment in the Bahamas." He further stated that, "Oceans Digital TV means hundreds of channels-many never before seen on cable TV in the Bahamas. It means new choices. It means a new standard in quality."

During the press conference the cable company showed an on-screen presentation that revealed the new ocean-hued logo, diagrams of the planned retail store in the Mall at Marathon, Nassau, and examples of their ad campaign and product brochures.

"Oceans Digital TV means new choices," Mr Burrows said. "It means new opportunities for Bahamians through [access to] our own radio stations [in the Bahamas], and through Cable 12 -- the community channel." The company plans to carry all of the radio stations in the Bahamas on its new digital cable television service so that cable subscribers will be able to listen to them through their TV.

According to the company, Oceans Digital TV will initially include more than 200 digital channels, and at launch will expand to include 24 pay-per-view channels, seven foreign language channels, 18 sports channels plus the seasonal NFL Sunday Ticket and NBA League Pass packages, 50 digital music channels, 20 radio stations from the Bahamas and the world, and more than 30 movie channels. In all Oceans will deliver 300 channels to cable subscribers in New Providence, Grand Bahama, Abaco and Eleuthera.

Burrows further stated that "in the future Oceans Digital TV will deliver high definition television and video on demand-a service that will only be possible because of Cable Bahamas' high capacity and robust network."

To facilitate the demand for these services, Cable Bahamas will operate new distribution centres in Eleuthera and Abaco. The company's existing customer care centre in downtown Freeport will serve customers on that island. These centres will provide opportunities for existing and prospective customers to see, hear and experience Oceans Digital TV, and to sign up for new services and purchase the new digital cable set-top box.

Mr Burrows revealed that the digital set-top boxes would start at $149.95 and that the company would offer a $50 rebate to customers who trade in their existing analogue set-top box for a digital one. Mr Burrows also provided an extensive demonstration of a digital set-top box and explained that the new digital set-top boxes offer an enhanced interactive programme guide and expanded parental control features.
