Harbour Island Regatta Continues Today
The Harbour Island Regatta and Homecoming commenced on Monday with an opening ceremony held at the Harbour Island Methodist Church. The regatta and homecoming is set to conclude on Sunday, October 16.
At least 19 sloops in the A, B and C-classes are scheduled to race beginning Friday.
Six sloops are expected to represent each of the sailing associations, the National Sailing Association, the Bahamas Boat Owners and Sailors Association and the Commonwealth Sailing Association.
According to BBOSA commodore, Dr. Reverend Phillip McPhee, the sloops that will be representing his association are A-class sloops Red Hot Thunderbird and the Southern Cross, B-class sloops the Barbarian and the Heathcliffe and C-class sloops the Fugitive, Vitamalt Thunderbird and the Lady Ruthnel.
The six sloops set to represent the NSA according to commodore, Richard Munroe in the A-class are Good News and the Pieces of Eight, B-class sloops Ants’ Nest and Williams Auto and C-class sloops Irene Goodnight and Mouthstache.
Munroe noted that the sloops in the NSA have been competing at the regatta since its’ inception.
The sloops set aside to represent the CSA according to former commodore Clyde Rolle in the A-class are the Red Stripe and the New Courageous, the B-class sloops include the Compari Lady Nathalie and the Eudeva and the C-class sloops will include the Lethal Weapon, Lady Eunice and Irene Goodnight.
Eleazor Johnson’s Compari Lady Nathalie, defending champion of the last regatta held in 2003 is confident about retaining his title.
“I have to go down there and try my best to win this year. The competition is not going to be as stiff as the other regattas that were held this year because they had many sloops competing. I have a better chance of winning over a smaller field of boats. This time I feel as if I can take the win again,” he said.
The United Spirit will be transporting the sloops.
This will be the final points race before the “Boat of the Year” is chosen.
According to Lynn Cleare, North Eleuthera Planning Committee chairman and regatta organizer several events have been planned for the entire week.
Tonight a gospel concert is planned then on Wednesday, October 12, a “Down Home Fish Fry” is set and on Thursday, October 13 boat registration and a skippers party will be held.
Another special event that would be held on Thursday is the “Briland Idol” competition whereby contestants from North Eleuthera will be performing for cash and prizes.
Then on Friday morning, October 14 sailing competition will begin on Friday that will run through Sunday and the opening ceremony will be held at 6 pm On Friday night a concert will be held featuring Elon Moxey and the Brilanders.
On Saturday, October 15, the regatta site will be separated into two venues. The first venue will be at the regatta site on Bay Street. The second site will be located at the Pink Sand Beach where a Briland Beach Bash will be held.
Later on Saturday, a junkanoo parade will be held and the youth band will also perform at 7 pm.
