Fig Tree News TeamNAGB EVENTS FOR JUNE 2006

The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas starts the summer season off with a bang with a new installment of our Summer Film Series focusing on films from the Caribbean and African Diaspora.

The films to be screened this month are "Sugar Cane Alley" (Martinique & France) on Thursday June 1st, "Ava & Gabriel" (Curacao & Netherlands) on Thursday, June 15th and "Amores Perros" (Mexico) on Thursday, June 29th. All films are free and open to the general public. Films begin at 8pm and take place at the NAGB's Outdoor Cinema on West Hill Street. Due to the content of some of the films, we urge parents not to bring children under the age of 17.

In the month of June, the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas continues its run of the wonderful exhibition on African Art entitled "What is Africa to Me? African Art from the Private Collection of Kay Crawford." This exhibition is incredibly strong visually and presents beautiful art from Africa including sculpture, textile, jewellery, masks, and basketweaving from such countries as Ethiopia, Mali, The Ivory Coast, The Congo and others.

Supporting the African Arts exhibit, the NAGB has invited noted American Art Historian, Curator, Author and Professor Richard J. Powell of Duke University who will speak on the concept of "African Diasporic Arts" on Thursday June 8 at 6.30pm.

Back by popular demand, The NAGB has invited David Weech again to do another installment of his popular Kite Making Workshop for kids and parents to take place on Saturday, June 10th and Saturday June 17th at 10am. Please call the Gallery early to secure your space in what promises to be another fun workshop.

This June, the NAGB is proud to launch its Summer Dance Programme with Roderick Johnson, noted Bahamian Dancer, Teacher and Choreographer. In a special preview of our summer of dance, Mr. Johnson will speak on "Bahamian Dance" on Thursday, June 22nd at 6.30pm.

Mr. Johnson will also be teaching Open Dance Classes on Friday nights at 6pm. On Friday, June 23rd will be a motivational session entitled "The Way We Move" where participants will learn principles of coordination, rhythm and new dance steps. And on Friday, June 30th is the "Ballroom and Romantic Dances" class where traditional dances like the Tango, Salsa, Waltz and Fox Trot will be taught.

So if you have a secret desire to learn how to Tango and dance the Quadrille and Rake 'n' Scrape, come out and give it a go in a friendly and fun environment. There will be a $5 donation for each session and participants are encouraged to wear comfortable fitting clothes and shoes.

The National Art Gallery is located on top of the hill on West Street and West Hill Streets next to St. Francis Xavier Cathedral. We're just 5 minutes from downtown Nassau and down the street from the world famous Graycliff Restaurant.

Please call us for further information at 328-5800/1. Or you may visit us online at www.nagb.org.bs. The Gallery is open from Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm, on Thursdays until 6pm.
