..."SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) - The Bahamas is urging residents to grow their own produce to help cut food imports by $500 million.
The state information agency says a government-backed tree-planting project will produce mangos, avocados, coconuts and citrus.
Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham said the government will also boost farm loans and create a disaster insurance fund to help after hurricanes.
Ingraham said Friday that an audit of 65,000 acres (26,300 hectares) of public land found much of it used for non-farming purposes, with some 2,000 farmers producing at 10 percent of capacity.
He said improving that to 50 percent would create jobs and boost the economy.
Most Bahamian food imports come from the U.S., South Korea and Japan...."...
