Nassau’s vigor extends to some of the Out Islands, where development, redevelopment, expansion and major renovation have been ongoing since summer 2010.
For jump-starters, there was the highly publicized reopening of the Bimini Big Game Club under the auspices of Guy Harvey Outpost last summer on North Bimini.
Also in North Bimini, Colorado-based RockResorts announced recently that it will take over management of 350-unit Bimini Bay Resort & Marina.
In Eleuthera, the new and expanding Sky Beach Club near Governor’s Harbour changed hands from Italian to Nassau interests, meaning stalled development is back on track. Currently open with three poolside cabana rooms and four four-bedroom homes, a hip restaurant next to the black-bottomed infinity pool, and a secluded beach, it has expansion plans scheduled to start after the spring season. They will include 11 more one-bedroom poolside rooms, four two-bedroom homes, two tennis courts, and a spa and fitness center — all to be completed within 18 months.
Next to Pineapple Fields, another Governor’s Harbour upscale resort in the race to open Eleuthera’s first resort spa, a new 25-acre botanical preserve attraction is expected to open soon.
Also under construction, an equestrian farm will bring horseback beach rides to the island.
A new reality show filmed on Eleuthera with celebrity chefs promises to earn the island further notice. Catch Clean Cook: The Caribbean is currently airing on Lifetime Real Women.
At the island’s southern end, two old celebrity playgrounds of the 1970s are being resurrected — Cotton Bay and Cape Eleuthera resorts.
Eleuthera’s most exclusive destination, Harbour Island, has kept vital with its star-studded reputation and movie shoots. The two big guns in the resort scene are upgrading and expanding.
The Dunmore, 48 years old and under new ownership, gave a facelift to its restaurant and 16 rooms while adding a new oceanfront swimming pool. It recently broke ground on a residential component; the first home should be finished by November.
Pink Sands Resort, too, is getting into the residential sales business with plans to offer new luxury homes in its rental program.
“The multi-generational vacation is becoming so big for us,” said Mark Kitchen, the general manager. “These new homes will really work for us there.”
Renting for $4,500 a night, the nearly completed four-bedroom Banyan Tree mirrors the ultimate level of luxury the resort, which overlooks its eponymous pink sand beach, has come to define.
