Fig Tree News TeamVictoria Selby-Cane is accepting donations for the silent auction on 8 March at the Sir George S. Roberts Library on Harbour Island: please give generously.

Current Island, Bahamas
Creating Safe Spaces for Children to Believe in Life Again

• Over 500 cases of child abuse are reported in the Bahamas each year.
• Due to a lack of safe spaces, The Ministry of Social Services often has difficulty finding alternative residences for these children.
• Many of the children are left in the homes while the perpetrators of abuse continue to live among them.
The Zion Children’s Home came about as the result of two dedicated women who took on the task of caring for children when they discovered the Government’s difficulty with placing abused and abandoned youth. With their insight and vision and the help of patrons, volunteers, and community agents the Zion Children’s Home has been able to construct two safe residences for abused children.
Challenge
With numerous children still on the waiting list for placement, the residential buildings still remain closed. The daily operation of the home has proven to be too great for the community of Current Island and the two visionary sisters. Despite their efforts and the finished residences, the desks, cabinets, rooms, and beds remain empty. The average cost of care for each child assigned to the home is approximately $10,000 per year.
The Hope…
You. With your generous support the abused and abandoned children of the Bahamas can have a safe place to grow. They can have a safe place to be nurtured and receive the care they need to become productive citizens in the world. They can fill these empty beds and receive a safe space to dream again.
With your help, these children can rise over the challenges they face. With a simple pledge, you can change the life of one of these children. Either by sponsoring a child for a year ($10,000 gift), making a one-time donation or scheduled donations, you can help rescue one of our most precious assets: our children.
Simply fill out the information card and mail it in with your gift and you can be a part of the movement to change the lives children in the Bahamas.
