Tropical Storm Jeanne forms, track points toward Florida

By MARTIN MERZER

mmerzer@herald.com

Now a tropical storm and soon to be a hurricane, Jeanne was predicted Tuesday to move along a track that could prove worrisome to, you guessed it, Florida.

The five-day forecast, subject to wide margins of error, had Jeanne growing into a hurricane today as it passed through Puerto Rico, clipping the Dominican Republic's northern coast on Thursday and rolling through the Bahamas on Friday and Saturday.

That track pointed in the general direction of South Florida, though the official forecast had the hurricane beginning to veer away on Saturday.

Forecaster Stacy Stewart of the National Hurricane Center in West Miami-Dade said it was too early to tell what would happen. He noted, however, that several computerized forecast models ``take the cyclone westward toward the Bahamas and the Florida peninsula.''

More immediately, Jeanne posed a threat to several Caribbean islands.

A hurricane warning was issued for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Other watches and warnings were posted for the British Virgin Islands and portions of the Dominican Republic.
