Latest Associated Press report:
Bertha becomes 1st hurricane of Atlantic season

MIAMI Hurricane Bertha continues to strengthen as it moves over the central Atlantic Ocean.

As of 11 a.m. EDT Monday, the Atlantic season's first hurricane was centered about 775 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands. National Hurricane Center forecasters say Bertha is expected to turn in the general direction of Bermuda.

It's still to early to tell whether Bertha will hit the island, but forecasters urged residents to monitor the storm's progress.

Palm Beach Post coverage:
Bertha miles away, rain here and now in Palm Beaches, Treasure Coast

We have our first hurricane of the Atlantic 2008 season sitting some 2,000 miles off the coast. Bertha developed her eye overnight and forecasters say she'll be churning over water for several days yet to come.

Meanwhile, we have a lot of rainy weather right here, right now.

The National Weather Service forecasts scattered rain this morning and heavier storms this afternoon.
