|Fig Tree News Team||Chairman of the Board John Tysse writes:
In the last year, the Harbour Island Day Nursery on Colebrooke Street [behind the Wesley Methodist Church, and beside St. John's Anglican Church parsonage and community hall] has gone under a restructuring and has several new Board Members. John Tysse serves as President, Gregory Higgs as Vice President, Robin Oppman as Secretary and Wade Higgs as Treasurer.
Tiffany Dean is now in charge of the Day Care educational programs and staff, with Verdell Higgs responsible for the overall care and maintenance of the facility and grounds. We are in the process of sending one or two teachers to Nassau for training and will continue to do this during the summer months so that all of the teachers will receive proper certification.
As a nonprofit Day Nursery, we are dependent on donations from the community and friends, as the expense of each child far exceeds the charge we impose on each parent. We have over 120 children from babies to age four. We provide two meals a day for the children, as the parents are working on the Island from early morning to late in the afternoon. We are dependent on receiving supplies from families who come to the Island to visit. Our staff is made up of twelve local community members and our budget is over $90,000 per year.
We recently received donations from three families of over $15,000 which enabled us to purchase and install quality playground equipment in the nursery play yard on Colebrooke Street. The equipment is commercial quality used in play grounds all over the US, and consists of swings, a log roll, and climbing equipment for the younger children. The owners of the company came to HI to instruct the local volunteers, who installed the equipment over a period of three days. Gregory Higgs cleaned the site, removed the old equipment, and reinforced the new equipment with cement. We have asked the government, as we are non profit, to waive the duty on the equipment and future supplies of the day care, so that we can use the funds for training of the staff.
We are in constant need of educational toys, coloring books, office supplies, Jumbo blocks, crayons and LEGOs. Donations can be given to Wayde Higgs or sent to the Church of World Missions, Box2430 Cleveland, TN. 37311. Please be sure to identify the donation going to the Harbour Island Day Nursery Account No. 040-0002.
Other members of the board include John Hilton, Nora Albury, Lucy Neeley, Ginny Carlson, Ada Slaight and Liz Berens.
