|Judy||The Sir George W. K. Roberts Memorial Library has been open and operating since January 24th. February through April a trained staff of volunteers successfully manned the library 3 full days a week: Tuesdays, 10 to 6 pm; Fridays, noon to 6 pm; and Saturdays, 10 to 6 pm. Story hours were held, videos were presented, a photo display of Harbour Island has been started,an adult book club completed reading two selections, and our second all day book festival was held.
During the peak hours of 3:30 to 6 pm. Aides were recruited to assist in the North Wing and homework mentors helped young people with their school projects in the Reference Room. Computer research was available when an adult mentor was able to monitor and assist. We tried very hard to have both a homework mentor and computer room volunteer during these peak times.
It has been a delight to see young people explore and enjoy books, use reference books, learn and practice research skills, and take pride in checking out and returning books. The volunteers have been great - praising and giving positive re-enforcement in abundance. The library system is a new experience and discipline for many of these children. Our goal has been to provide a constructive environment for all to enjoy. Many times when both wings have been actively in use (25 to 35 children), the mentors and aides have been an invaluable addition to the librarian on duty.
With many of the retired winter residents leaving the island, the library hours have had to be scaled back - Tuesdays and Friday hours are now open 4 to 6 p.m. Saturdays remain the same, 10 to 6 p.m. We are thankful for Jay Jay Percentie, a third year college student who has volunteered to open the library on Tuesdays and Fridays during these summer months while he is here on vacation. We encourage you to stop in, meet Jay Jay. If he needs additional help, offer him some time in the North and South Wings. Mr. Godfrey Kelly will be assisting him as well.
During July and August we hope to be able to find staffing to enable us to open more during the morning hours. Be ready to help if asked. A summer video/movie program is being planned for July - most likely in the evening hours.
Three very productive and successful months have been completed. Books checked in and out - 350+ membership cards issued - enthusiasm, appreciation and respect for books and the library itself are evident. We continue to look for alternative ways to staff and keep this ongoing.
