|Charlie Melot||We landed at North Eleuthera on Friday Sept. 14. There is now 4,000 feet of open runway. The rest is paved and should open soon. White Crown, the "jet center" is and has been open for more than a year. They have fuel and a nice air conditioned lounge as well as on site customs service. As for big jets we have had large corporate and private jets there for years. It was a marginal operation on the old rough runway. The new runway mostly makes it safer for existing traffic. We may see the a larger jet or two but I doubt we'll see any major influx. From a pilot's standpoint of view (landing there for 23 years) the new runway is absoultely gorgeous, a credit to the government for funding it and the company doing the work.|

Very convenient schedule for those flying out of Europe. No more overnight stays in Nassau required.

They already manage to get to the islands. Seems to me this will allow the true jet set to wing in without the hassles of changing planes in Nassau or Miami. But what will it mean for Brilanders and those who live in Spanish Wells and Eleuthera, I ask? Their flights won't change, will they?
Or am I an ignorant putz who is missing the point that this is mostly being done for safety's sake? If so, what benefit does doubling the runway length make, other than allowing much bigger, faster planes in? Night lights and gas make eminent sense. Please educate me!

|Fig Tree News Team||As you've come to know, the airport at North Eleuthera is closed to commercial flights during improvements. The landing strip is being repaved and extended to 6,000 feet. It is expected that 3,000 feet will be available starting on Sept. 3rd, enough for Twin Air from Fort Lauderdale and small charter flights from Nassau. The full 6,000 feet will be available at the end of September. Also by the end of September, lights will be installed to permit night landings. Commercial flights will be re-instated when repairs are complete. During the closing, taxis are available to bring passengers from the airport at Governors Harbour. Watch our What's New page for a notice of the re-opening.
If you're coming to Harbour Island from Europe, you can fly to Nassau from London or Paris. From the United States, fly into Nassau, Miami, or Fort Lauderdale.
From any of these three cities make sure you are booked into the tiny airport at North Eleuthera (ELH); other airports on Eleuthera will require a very long taxi ride. ELH is served by these airlines.
From Fort Lauderdale
Twin Air 954-359-6266
US Airways 800-622-1015
Continental Air 800-231-0856
US Air 800-622-1015
Continental Air 800-231-0856
Bahamas Air 800-222-4262
North Eleuthera Airport is a Port of Entry for private flights with a 4,500 foot runway with no tower, and currently no gas. However, plans are afoot to provide gas and open a jet center.
