Happy New Year to all of the enthusiastic supporters of the Harbour Island Community Center. You'll be glad to know that just since March 2000, we've not only been able to build out the Harbour Island location, but have also been fortunate enough to develop similar centers in Bluff, Eleuthera and Gregory Town, Eleuthera. Next up is the buildout of the Governor's Harbour center ... and all of this is being coordinated through your extraordinary donations.

Your support is vital
The Briland Modem Fund courts the hardware, software, computer book donations -- thank you, American Museum Association for the 10 Pentiums that arrived on Harbour Island the Friday before Christmas; next up are 15 Pentiums that have been generously given by the L.A. Shares project -- and works in tandem with the local island governments who manage the individual centers. We're also in talks with IBM Nassau to court their support of the ongoing endeavour throughout other Out Islands including Long Island -- Inagua -- Cat Island -- Exuma, so stay tuned for more e-updates.

Continuing tutorials
Community liaison Kayla Davis coordinates the day-to-day schedule of workshops at the Center, and looks forward to working with you at the Center while you're on the island for your next visit. If you'd like to offer a class or two -- everything from word-processing to HTML and web design has been requested, so feel free to be creative! -- while you're next on the island, please give her a buzz at hidc@batelnet.bs so that she can add you to the calendar.

Free e-mail accounts
At several workshops held at the Harbour Island Center these past few weeks, Mandy Barton, Brenda Woods and Kimberly King-Burns were able to sign up more than 100 students and adults with free e-mail accounts, that they'll be able to access free of charge at the center.

Every Child Counts
Lang Fincher [Harbour Island] and Karla Cosgroff [Gregory Town] are doing an incredible job of expanding the ECC's innovative developmental education programs throughout Harbour Island and Eleuthera. Many dyslexic, hard-of-hearing and slow-learning kids who were otherwise set aside in their classes are now getting the hands-on one-on-one attention that they need to excel at their lessons. Both can be reached online for more information: Lang at hana9@aol.com, Karla at kcosgus@yahoo.com. In the meantime, they very much appreciate your continued dispatch of children's software to support their various learning programs.

That's all for now --
Kimberly
