THE ENRON CORPORATION AND THE BAHAMAS
The community of environmentalists in The Bahamas can rightly claim victory over the evil forces that wanted to develop the Clifton Cay project, the last of the slave ruins in New Providence. Now comes a much bigger challenge. Edward St. George and the Grand Bahama Port Authority want to bring into The Bahamas, Enron Corporation to run a liquefied gas pipeline from Freeport to South Florida. Mr. St. George is as usual gung-ho about the investment, but he has not revealed to The Bahamas much about Enron Corporation and its connection to George W. Bush, the now President of the United States.

Texas has perhaps the worst environmental record in the US, and although the press tried to expose what was happening in Texas during the last election, in the US it did not have an impact. Those who are interested in this Corporation and its connection to George Bush can log on to google.com and then search for George W. Bush and Enron Corporation. You will come up with an amazing list of stories about the company. They make your hair raise off your head, and wonder how we would allow such a company in The Bahamas. There are allegations of environmental abuses in country after country including their home country the United States. These include abuses in Mozambique, Argentina, The United Kingdom, Panama, Bolivia and India.

We ought to be wary of all of this. Grand Bahama is already under another environmental threat. The Grand Bahama Port Authority has approved the moving of the West Sunrise Highway so that the former Princess Properties that had the misfortune of being built within the land can now build an artificial beach. This will mean cutting again into the aquifer of Grand Bahama. No word on whether an environmental impact study has been done on the issue. But profit drives the Port Authority and it is no respecter of persons or environment. The activist group associated with the Coalition for Democratic Reform has indicated that they plan to take the Port to court to stop the matter.
