The Iridium satellite phone network will again offer worldwide satellite voice, paging and short messaging services starting April 1. Iridium also expects to offer 2400-bps data service beginning June 1 with additional data service improvements later in the year.
Major improvements have been made in voice quality, and Iridium’s global paging service now offers up to 240-character message lengths with unlimited messages per month. Integrated voicemail is available. The only feature of the original Iridium that has not been improved is that the cellular service feature has been eliminated.
The best news is the extremely economical nature of the new Iridium airtime rate plans. Under our Basic Iridium rate plan, Iridium calls from any location worldwide to any public switched telephone number worldwide are just $1.49 per minute, and Iridium-to-Iridium calls are only $0.99 per minute.
