Regatta 2001 - Dunmore Town
Local government council member Nora Albury sends word that last weekend's Regatta 2001 was the most successful - and most peaceful - October homecoming and regatta event in years. Over 10,000 folks crowded Bay Street for the Saturday festivities -- offshore in the harbour and on land at the Fig Tree -- which detailed a world-class regatta, fashion show, food fair, local music … and many, many very happy local businesses. Nora adds, "Only one arrest was reported during the entire weekend, and even that one arrest was for disorderly conduct and nothing worse." Most of the weekend visitors stayed on the Eleuthera mainland, as only Romora Bay Club and Valentines Yacht Club were open. Dunmore Beach Club housed the security team that was brought in for the weekend, all of which team members were glad to report an inactive weekend on the rowdy front.

Nassau dignitaries who visited Harbour Island during the regatta weekend included Minister of Education Dion Foulkes, Sir Arlington Butler and national local government chief [and former Briland commissioner] Archie Nairn. Many thanks for the weekend's success are due to organizers Darrell Johnson [committee chair], Lynn Cleare [vice chair], Georgina Whitfield, Stephanie Roberts and Lydia Durham.
