I, too, once stood on a corner in downtown Manhattan-last fall, actually- and heard an UNMISTAKEABLE accent! I couldn't help myself and asked the gentleman"are you Bahamian?" And he said (in Shock!) "Yes I am!" So of course I asked him what island he was from and he told me I'd never heard of it so I said are you from Briland? And of course he almost fell down laughing because he was from ElUtra!
