Hello? It rained on New Year's Eve, for crying out loud!!! Plenty of action at the local churches, and at Runaway Hill Club, which brought in the new year with Hogheads playing. The place has been hopping for the past ten days, and New Year's Eve was rainy and wet. Most of the great bars are open air, and obviously didn't want to cram the folks in at Hammerheads, Vic Hum, Valentines or elswhere. Two great Junkanoo groups -- one from Eleuthera and another from Briland -- made their way to the Landing on New Year's Eve a little earlier than midnight. Since twelve o'clock came with a rainstorm, I wasn't too surprised to find most of the island heading home to sleep it off ... everyone was in rare form for the expanded Junkanoo on New Year's Day at the foot of the fig tree, anyway. The biggest float offered up the Statue of Liberty, the American Eagle, a Bahamian flamingo, island hibiscus and feathers with crepe paper ... all rocking to the Junkanoo beat.
