Jimmy Mather of Chapel Street was laid to rest on Sunday afternoon, with many family and friends in attendance at the graveyard service. Mr. Mather's memorial service was cut a bit short by the sound of fire engine sirens, as volunteer fire captain Jefferson Johnson raced through town to assist at an afternoon fire on Broadway south of Dunmore Street. The fire at Patricia Lewis' house was contained within minutes, but not before destroying Mrs. Lewis' rental house and damaging Terry Roberts' garage and Sabrina Higgs' 'Elsie's Takeaway Restaurant.' No injuries were reported, and the entire community is grateful for the police and fire commission's immediate response to the emergency. Fire captain Johnson and his all-volunteer team are to be roundly praised for their quick work, and the residents of the area are thankful for everyone's efforts to help them secure their belongings by removing them from the affected area.
