BY VANESSA C ROLLE
GUARDIAN STAFF REPORTER

General Elections will be held in The Bahamas on Thursday, May 2.

Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham made the announcement shortly after 8 p.m. last night in a nation-wide
broadcast on state-owned ZNS radio and television.

Ingraham also announced that today he will advise Her Excellency the Governor General Dame Ivy Dumont
to prorogue the House of Assembly. The House is scheduled to meet today.

The Prime Minister told the nation that immediately following Easter, pursuant to Article 66 of the
Constitution, he will advise the Governor General to dissolve Parliament on Wednesday, April 3, and to
issue a writ on Thursday, April 4 for general elections to be held.

Thanking God and Bahamians for the opportunity and privilege of leading them into the new millennium,
Ingraham stressed that he would not be seeking the office of prime minister for a third term, as was
communicated to the Bahamian people in 1992 when he was first elected to that office.
