Perhaps the Briland population as counted then included North Eleuthera and Spanish Wells? Regardless, that fact speaks volumes about the changes in expectations and life styles between then and now.

I wonder how much garbage the average Brilander generated back then? My guess is almost everything got reused, burned or transformed into something useful. And anyone who screwed up fishing or conching or the reefs probably would have faced serious anger from his friends and neighbors, just as the proponents of the marina development found.

I'm inclined to wax lyrical about the dangers of a small island such as Briland being polluted by American consumerism, but that is everyone's right. Living well and comfortably and, perhaps, to excess is something most people in the Western Hemisphere dream of--including me.

Thank goodness the decent people of Briland are still around to place a check on our wilder ambitions!
