Just because it occurs in other places around the world doesn't mean it should be tolerated here. If this island is to retain its attraction its people need to fight corruption when it does occur so that those dishonest enough to want to take unfair advantage of us soon come to realise that they are wasting their time.
What we need is strong leadership from members of the community who will not seek office to line the pockets of themselves, their family, and their friends. Leaders who will not turn a blind eye to unlawful activity because it is being perpetrated by their friends or because they have had their palm 'greased'. Our Town Council chairman waxed lyrical about preserving the natural beauty of Girls Bank and safeguarding the environment, yet he has refused to prevent the contractors working on the new property north of Parrots Perch from stealing sand from the dune that runs beside Parrots Perch. He said that he would investigate the new beach down the narrows and prosecute those involved, but no-one is facing a court appearance. He said he would force Tony Shogren to replace the post marking the road reservation on the Crown Land infront of the Taylor's house, but they are still missing. He said he would investigate Alex Shogrens wakeboard company, but he is still taking people out on his boat.
Once again the Town Council has made empty promises to the people of Harbour Island. The people who attended the last town meeting gave tremendous support to the actions the Council proposed taking. Yet still the Council has done nothing.
Either do the job you have been elected to do, Harvey Roberts, or move out of the way so a more able member of the community can do what needs to be done.
