Hi, everyone. Welcome to our first organized protest! The powers that be in Nassau - the Ministry of Works -- have decided this week that the middle of December would be a fine time to repave North Eleuthera Airport. The suggested repaving would not only take 6 weeks to complete, but would completely shut down the airport just in time for its busiest season of the year. With the Glass Window Bridge in and out of commission - a car washed off the bridge this week during a rainstorm - the connection between Governor's Harbour and North Eleuthera is going to be questionable. The petition below is politely requesting that the Ministry of Works reconsider its time frame, and reschedule for a less-busy time of the year. Tourism from overseas and locally has already been historically slow this fall in the wake of the September 11 attacks, and it'd be great if we were able to host a busy season this December to make up for some of those losses.

Please take a few moments to fax or e-mail the representatives noted below to show your frustration with the present situation, and please cc: info@briland.com so that we can track the effectiveness of this campaign. Thank you so much for participating!

Suggested letter, which we hope that you will personalize to suit your taste:

Ladies and Gentlemen:
After several months of discussion, The Ministry of Works announced this week their intentions to re-pave North Eleuthera Airport beginning 10 December 2001 and continuing for six weeks thereafter. This repaving will serve to physically close the airport to all incoming traffic for almost two months' time at the peak of the holiday travel season. Given that North Eleuthera's connection to South Eleuthera airports in Rock Sound and Governor's Harbour is at best tenuous given the damage to the island's single bridge during the recent Hurricane Michelle, such a closure at this time will prove to be disastrous to the local economy. We of the North Eleuthera and Harbour Island community have already experienced a severe slowdown in visitor and local travel thanks to the events of September 11th in the United States. We politely request that the Ministry of Works reconsider its decision to repave our aiport at this time, and to instead focus on a period of time that is much less busy, i.e. the summer months of 2002.
