Sent to the Ministry of Works, Ministry of Tourism and Ministry of Transport:

Dear Sir,

I was encouraged to hear that a decision has been made to re-pave the
North Eleuthera Airport, however the timing of these improvements is highly
questionable.

I would like you to consider the economic ramifications for the local
economy.
Let us assume that the population of Briland swells by 50% at this time of
year,
1500 people arrive, riding their bridals to inject an average of USD 1000
per head into the pockets of restaurants, hotels, taxi drivers and the odd
watering hole. That's $1.5 MM waiting to go into the economy of North
Eleuthera in the next two months. Don't let dat money go over to Habana !

The link between North and South Eleuthera is not capable of supporting the
number of people planning to make the journey. As you are aware time is a
premium in just about everybody's life, so adding an additional three hours
to the holiday makers journey will undoubtedly be read as a signal to take
their custom elsewhere. A situation which you are required by your position
to avert at all costs.

As a Bahamian working overseas, I constantly promote the Bahamas as the
only
place to be during the holiday season. I have copied in on this mail a
number
of friends and family who are all planning to spend the holidays on
Briland.
A few of these friends have never been to the Bahamas before and are
looking
forward to finding out how it's done Bahamian stylie. It doesn't take much
more than room temperature IQ to realise that we should postpone the
repairs
until the low season. The only conceivable reason to be making repairs at
this
time of year is if the condition of the runway is a threat to passenger
safety.
If that is the case, please put your skates on and sort it out PDQ, no need
to
wait for the 15th December to start the job.

I encourage you to delay and not cancel the improvements, and await your
response with the anticipation of a concerned voter.

Yours Sincerely, and with the utmost RESPECT !

Christopher L Johnson.
