An application has been received at the Harbour Island District Council office, wherein Tyrone Roberts of Nassau has filed an application for a 5-year conditional purchase lease of 32 acres of Crown Land consisting of Girls Bank north and west of the BEC power plant, on which he intends to erect a resort and 160-slip marina at an estimated cost of $2.2 million. The application for lease of crown lands is dated Feb 26, 2002.

Mr. Roberts - son of the current owners of the Nassau Yacht Haven and the former owners of the Roberts Harbour Club and Roberts Beach Club in Spanish Wells -- has also filed an application under the Building Regulations Act, the Town Planning Act 1961 & the Private Roads and Supervision Act 1961. There is an artist's sketch accompanying the applications which shows a network of canals, islands, roads and bridges spanning the existing bonefish flats with docks, buildings to house guest services and restaurants, boutiques and shops and about 36 guest cottages scattered about the outer islands of the development.

A public meeting has been scheduled to address this proposal. It will be held on April 4 at 7:30 pm at the Anglican Parish Hall on Colebrook Street. Everyone should attend. Please take a few moments to fax or e-mail the representatives noted below to show your opinion of the planned development, and please cc: info@briland.com so that we can track the effectiveness of this campaign. Thank you so much for participating!

Suggested letter, which we hope that you will personalize to suit your taste:

Ladies and Gentlemen:
The Harbour Island community has just learned of the application received by its District Council office, wherein Tyrone Roberts of Nassau proposes to take that open space known as Girls Bank and erect a resort and 160-slip marina on the bank itself and on the adjoining 32 acres of undeveloped Crown Land. The community of Harbour Island wishes to express its displeasure with such a proposal, given that Girls Bank represents a key element of Harbour Island's fragile marine ecosystem. The Girls Bank flats are an important filter for those bonefishing flats located northwest of Harbour Island harbour proper, and their destruction would greatly impact the area bonefishing, bottom-fishing and conching industries.

Our Crown Land is not for sale. We have been frustrated in the past with Nassau's tendency to override Harbour Island's local interests by making crown land available for sale to the highest bidder, but have now decided to make our voices heard.

We politely request that the powers-that-be that encouraged this application reconsider its decision to develop Girls Bank, and to instead focus on rebuilding the presently fragile infrastructure of Dunmore Town's roads, water and power supply.
