There is a choice for satellite phones in the Bahamas and the Caribbean! And, it's been in place since 1996....

I just read a recently published article in Space News describing the frustration residents of the Bahamas (and surely many other Caribbean islands as well) are experiencing with the demise of the Iridium system. The article goes on to say that people are understandably wary of the new Globalstar service which, only after it is officially available in this region later in the year, is feared may suffer a similar fate down the road.
